Elementary Schools

This professional development sequence covers a weekly rollout of Phase 1, Goal 2, through Phase 2, Goal 1, for elementary schools. Each step is designed to be 30 minutes long, unless otherwise noted.

PD #1: Phase 1, Goal 2 (30 minutes)

This presentation builds understanding of academic vocabulary and considers the level of thinking required of students with different standards.

PD #2: Phase 1, Goal 2 (30 minutes)

This presentation develops teaching points for English Language Arts (ELA) standards.

PD #3: Phase 2, Goal 1 (30 minutes)

This presentation introduces the REAL criteria, and provides time for participants to consider their R standards.

PD #4: Phase 2, Goal 1 (30 minutes)

This presentation adds a layer of data to prioritizing, and reconsiders the R standards and the rest of the reading standards.

PD #5: Phase 2, Goal 1 (30 minutes)

This presentation leads participants in beginning to consider the first unit, including the following questions: What standards would I teach in my first unit? What would the priority be? How would I name that unit?

PD #6: Phase 2, Goal 1 (30 minutes)

This presentation considers the conceptual understanding with which students should leave the unit, including examples.

PD #7: Phase 2, Goal 1 (30 minutes)

This presentation considers the questions that will drive the thinking within the unit, including examples.

PD #8: Phase 2, Goal 1 (30 minutes)

This presentation provides time to learn about the reading elements of the unit (i.e., phonics, word study, guided reading, writing, independent reading, read aloud).

PD #9: Phase 2, Goal 1 (full day)

This full-day workshop provides time to work on writing curriculum units, including a handout on elements of the unit.
